Guided hiking weekends in Snowdonia
Every year, members of Orthodox Christian Youth UK spend a weekend in Snowdonia to climb Snowdon and visit the Orthodox parish in Blaenau Ffestiniog.
When is the next trip? These trips are organised at least once every year by friends and members of OrthodoxYouthUK.

Who is it suitable for?Don't worry, you don't need to be super fit as we won't all rush off ahead! This walk is open to young adults of all abilities, however it does help if you have a good level of general fitness to let you enjoy the walk and the mountain scenery.
What's the plan?Friday:
• Arrive late on Friday (no evening meal provided). Saturday: • Morning prayers, followed by cooked English breakfast. Prepare sandwiches for lunch. • Midday start: walk to the summit of Snowdon and back via the Watkin Path. • Return from walk around 6pm, free time, dinner, camp fire (weather permitting) Sunday: • 8:30 am start: pack up and pre-communion prayers • 10:30 am Divine Liturgy at the Church of All Saints of Wales, in Blaenau Ffestiniog • Lunch & free time with Father Deiniol • Departures around 4pm |
Where are we staying?
For those who haven't been before, we will be staying in a 150 year old cottage at the foot of Snowdon. It is in a beautiful spot near the start of the Watkin Path mountain trail, with log fires but no central heating. There are twelve beds with extra mattresses on the floor; pillows and a few blankets are also provided. The cottage is self-catering, so we will share food and meals.
Cottage address: Snowdon View, Nant Gwynant, LL55 4NW
Drivers may contact one of the event coordinators for more detailed driving instructions, complete with Google maps overlay and pictures!

What kit do I need?
You will need to have correct footwear and clothing for walking on rough tracks in a mountain environment. We would recommend sturdy walking shoes or suitable walking boots (not trainers or street footwear). Even in the summer, mountain weather can be very fickle so it's best to have enough clothing and waterproofs for every eventuality. See here for a basic guide to layering outdoor clothing.
• A sleeping bag (ESSENTIAL), pillow case, towel, and toiletries.
• If you feel the cold, some extra clothes (vests, leggings, woollen jumpers), hot water bottle. • Suitable clothing for mountain hiking. Multiple thinner layers are better than few thick layers. • Walking boots, and waterproofs (waterproof trousers too, if you have them). • Hat, gloves, and an additional outer layer for when we reach the top. • Some snacks to share on the climb and at the cottage. • Musical instruments, games for entertainment, etc. • A small but powerful torch (very important if we finish the walk late). What should I do now?Contact us to register your interest, check availability, or confirm your attendance.
Before we can confirm your place on a trip, you must let us know the following: 1. Your mobile phone number and email address. 2. Any dietary restrictions (for shared meals), and medical conditions relevant to the climb. 3. Whether you will need or can offer a lift to the cottage, and where you will be travelling from. 4. Contact details for a responsible friend or family member in case of emergency. - (name, phone number, relation to you) We'll need volunteers to purchase food for the shared meals (costs will be reimbursed) ...and also some people to volunteer for cooking! What's the weather like? The weather can be especially fickle on a mountain, so it is always worth checking the latest forecasts before you travel. In general, it is often 4-5°C cooler at the top than in the valleys.
