The Orthodox Youth Festival is a wonderful opportunity, both for those who have been in the Church all their lives, as well as those who are just starting out on their journey. Each year, with a blessing from our hierarchs, the festival is run by those who have attended the previous year(s), and been inspired by their experiences, and who have wished to give their time and efforts for the continuation of this special event.
So what happens at the festival? A group of relatively young Orthodox people converge, often from a colourful array of different cultures, and varied walks of life. They listen to talks prepared on a theme by trusted priests, nuns and laypeople of the Church. They have many opportunities to ask questions, both in groups and in private. They go for walks along the shoreline, or if they are brave, they enter into the depths of the emerald ocean (or the meek, greyish waters of the Essex coast). They attend services in the ancient 7th Century chapel of St. Peter, built by St. Cedd of Lindisfarne, which stands peacefully by the shore, its dry-stone walls glowing golden in the sunlight. They play games together, eat together, sing together, dance together, and speak long into the night with new-found friends. Much is shared and much gained! The Othona community are very hospitable, and provide a lovely setting for the event.
Year after year, God helps this event be a true gift for those who attend, who invariably go back to their day-to-lives with new inspiration.
